About this route
Veľký Grič is a non-standard secured route on one of the prominent rocky peaks of the Vtáčnik range above Handlová, where the protection is chains rather than the usual steel cable. Graded B and running about 400 m, it is fairly simple but pleasantly airy, climbing steep, grass-covered rock below the towers of the Bastion wall up toward the Veterné sedlo (Wind saddle); climbers mostly use it to descend after their routes. A ferrata set is not strictly necessary but is welcome on the steep grassy slope, and a helmet is advisable given the loose ground. The thirty-minute approach follows blue tree markings and then white 'reťaze' (chains) marks, with a poorly signed trailhead – just a small painted arrow on a tree – and navigation apps sometimes route via forest roads unsuitable for low cars. It rewards with open views over the surroundings of Handlová.
