About this route

The Sparber steig is an easy secured path to the summit of the Sparber, where a handful of ropes and ladders unlock terrain that hikers could not safely manage on their own. The fixed section itself is short and graded around A, with only a few small ladders, some cable and one final long ladder before the route continues unroped and exposed to the narrow summit. Reaching it is the real effort: the approach from Gasthof Kleefeld near Strobl climbs steeply through forest and meadow and takes roughly two hours. There are no emergency exits, the protection is dated though adequate, and the climbing demands sure footing because the securing is discontinuous rather than a continuous cable. The reward is a superb panorama over Lake Wolfgang, making it a fine outing for hikers who do not mind a long walk in for a beautiful top.

Highlights

  • Superb views over Lake Wolfgang
  • Ladders unlocking an otherwise impassable summit
  • A long, steep two-hour approach
