About this route
Rettenkogel - Steig is a gentle grade A outing in the Salzkammergut peaks, where the cable-protected climbing is really just a brief, fun episode within a much longer mountain day. The protected stretch covers only about 130 vertical metres, and its highlight is a sequence of three long ladders that liven up an otherwise easy line on the north-facing slope. What truly defines the day is the effort around it: a roughly three-hour approach from Gasthof Zur Wacht and a total ascent of around 1,250 metres that calls for solid stamina. Best tackled between June and September, it suits beginners, families and hikers who want a touch of secured climbing rather than a technical challenge.
