About this route

The Purtschellersteig is an easy A/B secured path that climbs steeply rocky, partly exposed terrain to the 1783 m summit of the Schafberg above St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut. Real climbing technique is not needed, but sure-footedness, a head for heights and some arm strength help on the short scrambling steps, with only one genuinely secured steep section. The long part of the day is the ascent itself, roughly 1180 m of climbing over about 7.6 km, so an early start pays off. Many parties take the Schafbergbahn cog railway back down or link the route into a full Schafberg traverse. Best left until late May or later, as early-season snowfields lying on the cable can be dangerous.
