About this route

The Postalmklamm Klettersteig is one of Austria's most popular gorge routes, set in the Salzkammergut mountains and threading the region's wildest ravine since 2006. You climb through the canyon above the rushing Russbach, crossing several bridges and traversing past a waterfall and a deep pool, with the lower section rated medium and the Gamsleckenwand above turning markedly more exposed over overhangs. At the end you choose between the demanding upper wall or the super-extreme F-Variante, an overhanging finish added in 2011 that should only be tackled by very experienced climbers with rope belay. The rock gets very slippery when wet, so waterproof clothing is wise. A varied, full-bodied outing that draws crowds in summer — set out early and bring a complete kit.

Highlights

  • Wild gorge over the Russbach
  • Optional overhanging F-Variante
  • Waterfall, bridges and a deep pool
