About this route

The Klettersteig Wilder Hund is a demanding sport via ferrata in the Loferer Steinberge, opened in 2014 near the Schmidt-Zabierow-Hütte and named for the 'wild dog' it takes to climb it. Sustained at grade D in several places, it is very well secured with steel cable but offers only a few foot pegs, so it demands genuine arm strength and good technique rather than relying on rungs. The line runs up from the Große Wehrgrube and links into the neighbouring Klettersteig Nackter Hund, allowing the two to be combined as a long route topping out on the Mitterhorn at 2506 m. The approach is a serious undertaking in itself, around 30 minutes from the hut up to the entrance after the climb to the refuge, making this a full high-mountain day. With its difficulty and wild surroundings, it is a route for fit, experienced and well-equipped ferratists, not for beginners.

Highlights

  • Sustained grade-D sport climbing
  • Few pegs, demanding arm strength
  • Link-up to the Mitterhorn summit
