About this route
Klettersteig Irg II is one of the newer Dachstein via ferratas, leading to the summit of the Großer Koppenkarstein at 2865 m with enjoyable yet very airy climbing. Graded C/D and rated moderate, it is not extreme in difficulty, but the exposure and a sustained line make it a serious high-alpine undertaking of around two hours that can be linked with other ferratas and treks. The approach rides the Dachstein gondola to the Hunerkogel station, then descends onto the glacier and passes through the Rosmarie tunnel to the south side, so crampons may be needed, especially in spring. The route is named after Georg 'Irg' Steiner, first ascender of the Dachstein south face, and was rebuilt and shifted into Styria after the original line had to be dismantled; descent follows the easier west-ridge ferrata back to the glacier, best suited to fit via ferratists with high-mountain experience.
