About this route
The Kaiser Franz-Joseph-Klettersteig threads up the roughly 860-metre-high Seemauer above the photogenic Leopoldsteiner See near Eisenerz, a long and demanding D-grade sport via ferrata that takes around four hours of climbing. The entry wall throws down its hardest cards early, with two D-graded overhangs, before an extremely exposed headwall leads toward the Hochblaser at 1771 m, and the route finishes on a memorable double cable bridge. The approach from the lakeside parking is short, only about fifteen minutes, so the day is dominated by the climbing and a lengthy descent. The line carries the name of Emperor Franz Joseph, who is said to have hunted chamois in the middle of this very wall over a century ago. There is no water on route and the steel cables are removed for a winter closure, so come well prepared and only with solid experience and endurance.
