About this route
The Jägihorn-Klettersteig above Saas-Grund is one of the great high-alpine via ferratas of the Valais, topping out at 3206 metres as the highest in the Western Alps. Rated C/D overall, with an extremely exposed variant up to K4-K5, it strings together some 900 metres of climbing on around 400 iron steps and five ladders, with breathtaking views of Switzerland's four-thousanders. The crux is a stomach-churning three-cable suspension bridge near the main summit, which can be bypassed by an alternative line dropping into the gorge and climbing back up. You start from the Hohsaas gondola base in Saas-Grund, with the Weissmieshütte serving the area, and the approach takes well over an hour. Reserved for fit, experienced climbers with a head for heights, it should only be attempted in settled summer weather, with care for lingering snowfields on the descent.
