About this route
Hirschsteig is the Normalweg up the Drachenwand (summit 1,060 m) in the Salzkammergut, a longer A/B route that gains around 725 m from the Gasthof Drachenwand. Only lightly secured with steel cable and three ladders, it makes modest technical demands but threads above steep cliffs, and that exposure is exactly where the danger lies: in autumn slippery roots and leaf-covered stones have caused several fatal falls. The approach follows marked trail toward the Theklakapelle chapel, where the paths divide. Most climbers descend it after the harder Drachenwand Klettersteig, though it can be done on its own; either way it rewards a sure foot and care over technique, with fine views over the Mondsee from the top.
