About this route
Gonella is not a sport ferrata but the aided final stretch of the Italian normal route on Mont Blanc, leading up to the Rifugio Gonella at 3071 m. The cabled climbing itself is technically easy (grade A/B), with chains, ladders and steel ropes on a steep, rocky trail, but it is only the last part of a serious high-mountain undertaking. The approach is long, around four hours up the Glacier du Miage from Val Veny, so glacier experience and full equipment such as crampons, ice axe and rope are essential. Yellow waymarks lead up the upper rock once the trail cuts off the ice. This is a route to be judged as an alpine objective, suited to fit mountaineers heading for Mont Blanc rather than climbers after technical difficulty.
