About this route
The Gleiwitzer Höhenweg is a long, committing high-alpine ridge tour rather than a pure via ferrata, leading from the Gleiwitzer Hütte to the summit of the Hoher Tenn (3368 m) in the Hohe Tauern. Its exposed line carries via ferrata sections secured with cable and stirrups, but the crest to the summit also holds unprotected grade-2 climbing, so solid alpine experience is essential. Graded around C and roughly 1200 metres of secured ground, the real challenge is the scale and remoteness: the approach and descent each run several hours, making for a genuinely big mountain day. It should only be tackled in settled weather, with via ferrata kit and glacier gear should snow lie. This is a route for fit, seasoned mountaineers comfortable on long, airy ridges.
