About this route

Via ferrata Gianni Costantini winds across the vast rocky flanks of the Moiazza in the Dolomites and is widely known as the 'Super Ferrata' — one of the longest, hardest and most celebrated routes in the range. Graded D, it strings together aerial traverses and steep walls with barely a moment's respite, climbing roughly 1,200 m and demanding six hours or more of sustained effort. Opened in 1974 in memory of CAI Agordino member Gianni Costantini, it is usually tackled from the Rifugio Carestiato above Passo Duran. Escape options mid-route are limited, thunderstorms on the exposed ridges are a serious danger, and an early start is essential. This is a route strictly for fit, experienced ferratists ready for a very long day.

Highlights

  • Vast Moiazza rock walls
  • Sustained, exposed traverses
  • Legendary 'Super Ferrata' length
