About this route

Ferrata Drachenwand (var. C/D) rises above the Mondsee in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut and ranks among the country's most sought-after via ferratas, famous above all for its signature suspension bridge spanning a dramatic gap. The 560-metre route climbs to the 1176-metre summit with sweeping views over the lake, opening with a pair of B-grade ladders at the start. The climbing itself is rarely extreme, peaking at grade C, so anyone steady with heights who can handle the exposed bridge, or take the C/D variant that bypasses it, will find it manageable. Given its popularity, set off early or late to avoid queues, and treat the conditions seriously: it's a no-go in rain, has no emergency exits, and the steep, partly unsecured descent through the Drachenloch rock window takes around an hour and a half. Note that the route is typically closed from November into early May.
