About this route
Cassiopea climbs the Torrione Comici in the Dolomiti Friulane and ranks among the toughest via ferratas in Carnia, a graded D (TD) line for experienced, well-equipped alpinists only. Much of it runs straight up a vertical, severely exposed wall, following a historic climbing route that without the cable and rungs would involve III and IV+ moves. The summit is named after Emilio Comici, who first forced this bold tower in 1936, and the airy line is matched by sweeping views over the Friulian Dolomites. The descent is itself a via ferrata, steep and sparsely fitted, and is reckoned more demanding than the climb. Add a long forest approach from Forni di Sopra and a serious thunderstorm risk on the tower, and this becomes a committing full day for confident, fit parties.
