About this route
The Attersee Klettersteig runs up the Mahdlgupf directly above the Attersee in the Salzkammergut mountains, prized for its striking blend of lake and rock views. Graded D/E, it is a long, exposed and physically demanding line of around 870 metres that takes roughly three and a half hours and is no place for beginners or children. In 2020 the entrance was rerouted to open straight onto a hard D/E key passage, deliberately added to deter the inexperienced after a spate of rescues, with the chocolate overhang, the Schokoüberhang, as the crux. The west-facing wall turns tricky when wet and offers no emergency exit, and the route closes seasonally from 1 November to 31 March, so it is best saved for fine, dry weather.
